  1. Certified copies of official academic transcripts in ENGLISH (full transcripts for each tertiary institution attended)
  2. Certified copies of degree certificates in ENGLISH (for each tertiary institution attended where applicable)
  3. Applicants from universities situated in non-English speaking countries: TOEFL/IELTS certificate OR letter from previous tertiary institution stating “English as medium of instruction” for the programme
  4. Curriculum vitae (include work experience)

Please note that if the following documents are not submitted this will cause a delay in the processing of your application.

  3. A detailed curriculum vitae. PhD applicants to please include in their CV a summary of their Master's research and list any publications which may have arisen through their research.
  4. Letters of reference (one from the professor under whom you have studied and if applicable one from your employer).

Any new applicant for postgraduate study has to be assigned to an academic staff member who will ultimately become their supervisor. Applicants must make contact with the proposed supervisor prior to their formal application. View the areas of research and contact details of academic staff members. Please include with your application the name of the academic staff member you made contact with and a description of your area of research. PhD applicants see PhD Project Proposal.

The medium of instruction and examination at UCT is English. We require students to be proficient in English before they register. You will need to include an original copy of your TOEFL or IELTS score. Please refer to the section on English language proficiency for more details.
