• Before making a formal application for postgraduate study, you are strongly advised to contact the Department in order to obtain advice about your proposed study.
• Making contact with the Department is particularly important for candidates interested in research since they must ensure that the Department has the facilities and the expert supervision that will be necessary.
• It is essential that postgraduate students interested in taught masters programmes (i.e. masters programmes primarily by coursework) and postgraduate diplomas also contact the relevant departments so that they are fully aware of the structure of these programmes.

Please note that if the following documents are not submitted this will cause a delay in the processing of your application.

1. Submission of academic qualifications:
   • obtain in a sealed envelope from the university concerned an original full transcript of your academic record for all the years of study (This transcript must include all details of courses taken and the marks obtained.) This needs to be sent to the Admissions Office, University of Cape Town, Private Bag X3, Rondebosch 7701, Western Cape, South Africa.
   • attach certified copies of your degree certificates to your application form.

3. A detailed curriculum vitae. PhD applicants to please include in their CV a summary of their Master's research and list any publications which may have arisen through their research.
4. Letters of reference (one from the professor under whom you have studied and if applicable one from your employer).

Any new applicant for postgraduate study has to be assigned to an academic staff member who will ultimately become their supervisor. Applicants must make contact with the proposed supervisor prior to their formal application. View the areas of research and contact details of academic staff members. Please include with your application the name of the academic staff member you made contact with and a description of your area of research. PhD applicants see PhD Project Proposal.

The medium of instruction and examination at UCT is English. We require students to be proficient in English before they register. You will need to include an original copy of your TOEFL or IELTS score. Please refer to the section on English language proficiency for more details.
